Change Your Shopify Theme Without Losing Content (6 Steps)
You can change your Shopify theme without losing content: your products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts stay exactly where they are. What you lose is the design work you did inside the old theme, from homepage sections to colors and fonts. This guide shows what happens when you change your Shopify theme, what to back up first, and a 6-step switch you can undo at any point.
Yes, you can. Shopify says your products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts are not changed or deleted when you switch themes, because they are managed in the admin, separate from the theme.
What does not carry over is everything you set up in the theme editor: section and block settings, colors and fonts, theme text, code edits and custom templates. Install the new theme as a draft, rebuild those parts, then publish. Your old theme stays in your library, so you can switch back.
A Shopify theme is the design layer: the layout, the sections on each page and the styling. Your store data sits underneath it. When you publish a new theme, the data stays and only the design layer changes.
| Stays (managed in the Shopify admin) | Has to be redone (owned by each theme) |
|---|---|
| Products | Settings for sections and blocks |
| Collections | Global theme settings, such as colors and fonts |
| Menus (navigation) | Text and wording |
| Pages, such as About and Contact | Code customizations, including those added by apps |
| Blog posts | Available theme templates |
Shopify also notes that changes made in the theme editor, theme code editor and language editor are unique to each theme.
A quick vocabulary note. A section is a full-width building block of a page, like a slideshow or a featured collection. A block is a smaller piece inside a section, like a single slide or a button. The theme editor is the visual editor you open with the Edit theme button in Online Store → Themes.
Three things catch merchants out after a switch:
None of these steps is required, but each one makes the rebuild faster and the switch safer.
.zip copy to the address on your staff login.Go to Online Store → Themes and add the theme from the Shopify Theme Store or by upload. New themes land in the Draft themes section; your live store does not change.
For a paid theme you can click Try theme on its Theme Store page to add it to your store and preview it before you buy. You cannot edit the theme code while it is on trial, and you have to purchase the theme before you can publish it. Not sure whether to pay at all? See free vs paid Shopify themes.
Check your theme count first. On the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans you can hold up to 20 themes, and Shopify Plus allows 100. If you are at the limit, delete an old draft you no longer need.
Click Edit theme on the draft theme and work through it in this order:
Your products, collections and pages already appear in the preview, so you are styling real content, not placeholders.
Landing pages and campaign pages built from theme sections need to be rebuilt in the new theme's sections. If you would rather not tie those pages to any one theme's section set, a page builder app is the alternative.
Page builder
Our own XO Builder is one option: it builds pages, sections and mega menus with a drag-and-drop editor, and its listing says it works with all themes. Pages you build with it are not tied to one theme's section set, so the next switch does not mean rebuilding them.
Open the draft's Preview and click through the pages a customer would visit:
If the theme is paid and you added it with Try theme, buy it first; Shopify only lets you publish themes you have purchased.
Then, in Online Store → Themes, find the theme in Draft themes and click Publish. You can also publish from the theme editor: click Publish on the top bar, then Publish again in the confirmation window. Publishing does not change who can access your store, so a password-protected store stays protected.
Your old theme moves to Draft themes when you publish the new one, and Shopify says none of its changes are lost. If something breaks, publish the old theme again from Online Store → Themes while you fix the new one.
Keep the old theme in your library for a few weeks before you delete it.
If the only problem is a section you are missing, check whether your current theme or an app already covers it before you rebuild a whole store. If you use a Xotiny theme, ask our theme support first. A switch is worth it when the new theme fits how you sell: the layouts, product page features and industry details you would otherwise patch together.
Changing your Shopify theme keeps your products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts. You rebuild the design layer: sections, settings, theme text, code edits, templates and app placements. Add the new theme as a draft, rebuild, test, publish, and keep the old one ready to roll back.
If you are picking the new theme now, start with a preset built for your industry. Browse Xotiny's themes on the Shopify Theme Store, with presets for beauty, food and drink, home, sports and more.
